“What an ugly pug!” from Rahr

As this local beer just recently won a bronze medal (not its first award, either), let’s take a closer look at that best-selling product from across the county line.

The Ugly Pug Black Lager is one of Rahr & Sons’ original beers, brewed ever since they opened for business four years ago. It has saturated Fort Worth and remains one of the local favorites, and at times demand outstrips supply.

The story on the label tells the circumstances of the name, when brewer Fritz Rahr commented on his mother-in-law’s pug Oscar with “What an ugly pug!” The name stuck, and many sales may be attributed to collectors and pug fans seeking out the beer simply for the logo.
